I am a South African photographer based in Hong Kong. I moved here 3 years ago and live in Happy Valley now. I take the tram almost every day to Causeway Bay or to Admiralty, where I then take the MTR if I have to go far.
In South Africa there are no trams, it’s mostly private vehicles. Here on the other hand one of the first things I read about Hong Kong before moving here was the tram! There are not many places where for about $2, you can have one of the best introductions to a city.
I like the pace of the tram, you see many photographers taking the tram, it gives you space to visualize the city in another way. As a street photographer specifically, the perspective from the upper deck of the tram, from being up; gives you a different perspective. That elevation gets you off the ground and lets you look down at the city while staying close. It adds so much character to the city.
