The first time I fell in love with the tram was in 1994, my 1st year of university. I was studying in New Zealand and I came back every summer for vacation. I was not a big tram fan before.
My grandmother used to take me when I was young, but she would never let me sit on the upper deck. She said that was first-class for rich people only. The lower deck was always packed and I hated standing for the whole journey.
Things changed after our family moved to New Zealand. I felt homesick. I missed the vibrancy of Hong Kong. I also missed the Ding Ding. That summer holiday was the first time I could finally choose to sit on the upper deck! I remember sitting on the front row watching the passing scenes.
From then on, I spent all my summer holidays riding the tram. Then I realised there are different models. My favourite is Tram #120. I miss the old way of displaying the name of destinations in Chinese, from right to left. It sounds really funny if you read it from left to right, Sheung-Wan-Kai-Si becomes Si-Kai-Wan-Sheung.
I recently started sketching different tram bodies with imaginary advertisement. I made a few sketches featuring famous local celebrities (such as Leslie Cheung, Anita Mui), but my favourite is the one with my wife on the tram, it was her birthday gift!
