For me the tram is like a piece of moving history. It is one of the few symbols of our past which you can still see and is actually still working.
My best friend from high school actually had her wedding party on a tram. After the wedding reception we all boarded a tram at the Whitty Street Depot and I remember them doing their first dance as a married couple on the open-top upper deck. Her husband is Swedish so they wanted to find something uniquely “Hong Kong” to do. We had so much fun, we all danced and squeezed in; waving at people on the street in our euphoria and people waved back, it was so special.
When we were teenagers, our school was in Yau Ma Tei, but we loved exploring the rest of the city, pretending we were tourists. We would hop on the tram and go to Kennedy Town and Sheung Wan and speak to people. We have so many memories of doing that together, it was perfect that she ended up having her wedding party on a tram too.
